When you own a car, you may have many questions about its parts, especially the transmission. At Quality Transmission & Auto Service, Inc., we’ve put together a frequently asked questions page for you so you can get quick answers to your questions you may have.

Question -- How Often Do I Need To Replace Transmission Fluid?

This depends on whether your vehicle has an automatic or manual transmission. A car with an automatic transmission system will generate more heat than its manual counterpart. This means that the car will produce more carbon, which will contaminate the transmission fluid over time, causing it to thicken – meaning it won’t be able to do its job effectively. Your car manufacturer should specify how often the transmission fluid needs to be changed. In most cases, this is a figure of around 30,000 miles. Some manufacturers will recommend that you never need to change your transmission fluid. In this case, you should still get it checked periodically to make sure there are no leaks.

In some scenarios, you may need to get your transmission fluid changed more often. For example, if you live in a big city and do a lot of “stop and go” trips where you change gears frequently, you will find that your transmission needs to be changed more frequently than the average.

Question -- What Are The Signs That I Need Transmission Repair?

There are many warning signs that can be telltale indications that you need to get your car to a repair shop. One telltale sign is that you experience transmission slipping. This is where your car will appear to change into another gear for no apparent reason. During this, you might also notice an unusual noise coming from the engine. You may also experience rough gear shifts in which your car will have trouble getting up to a good speed, in addition to having trouble changing gears when it normally does easily. A rough shift can sometimes be accompanied by a thudding sound coming from the engine.

Your car might also suffer from delayed engagement. When you shift into drive, you may find that there is a noticeable delay. You may also spot transmission fluid leaking wherever you park your vehicle. Generally, transmission fluid will appear to be bright red, dark red, or brown. Another sign that you need transmission repair for your car is that a transmission warning light is lit on the dashboard.

Question -- How Much Does Car Transmission Repair Cost?

The cost of transmission repairs can vary greatly depending on the circumstances. A simple repair for your transmission could cost only $150 or so. However, if your transmission is damaged to the point that it needs to be completely replaced, you could end up spending over $3,000 for a replacement. You can avoid having to pay for such costly repairs by regularly having your transmission fluid inspected.

At Quality Transmission & Auto Service, Inc., we can help you with all of your transmission needs. If you suspect there is a problem with your transmission, bring your car into the shop and we will take a look.
